The Family Emballonuridae, commonly known as sac-winged or sheath-tailed bats, is a group of small to medium-sized insectivorous bats found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. They are named for the glandular sacs located on their wings, which are used in social and mating displays, including scent marking and communication. Emballonurids typically roost in caves, hollow trees, or under foliage and are nocturnal, emerging at night to feed on flying insects. Most species are highly agile fliers, and their social behavior ranges from solitary individuals to colonies, often with complex vocalizations and territorial interactions. This family plays an important ecological role in controlling insect populations.
