The Family Scaphiophrynidae is a group of frogs endemic to Madagascar, commonly known as Malagasy burrowing frogs. These frogs are adapted for a fossorial (burrowing) lifestyle, with robust bodies, short limbs, and hardened snouts that help them dig into sandy or loose soils. Most species are terrestrial and spend much of their life underground, emerging primarily during the rainy season to breed in temporary pools. Scaphiophrynidae display diverse reproductive strategies, often laying eggs in ephemeral water bodies, and they play important roles in controlling insect populations and maintaining Madagascar’s unique ecosystem balance.
