The Family Pteropodidae, commonly known as flying foxes or fruit bats, is a group of large, mostly frugivorous bats found throughout Africa, Asia, Australia, and some Pacific islands. Members of this family have large eyes and keen eyesight to navigate and locate fruit, relying less on echolocation than other bats. They feed primarily on fruits, nectar, and flowers, playing a critical role as pollinators and seed dispersers in tropical and subtropical ecosystems. Pteropodids are mostly nocturnal or crepuscular, roosting in large colonies during the day, and exhibit strong social behaviors, often forming complex networks for foraging and communication.
