The Family Phyllostomidae comprises the New World leaf-nosed bats, a highly diverse group found throughout Central and South America. Members are characterized by a leaf-like structure on their noses, which aids in echolocation. Phyllostomids display remarkable dietary diversity, including fruit, nectar, insects, small vertebrates, and even blood in the case of vampire bats. They play important ecological roles as pollinators, seed dispersers, and insect controllers, contributing to the health and regeneration of tropical ecosystems. This family demonstrates exceptional adaptation and versatility, making it one of the most ecologically significant bat families in the Americas.
